poetry and biblical pottery

Janet Kaiser, in her message re: poetry and potters, brought up a
potter reference in the Bible in Book of Jeremiah. It raised my
curiosity. So, having a database available to me, I did a search for
the word "Potter". There was not a lot there, but it was an interesting
exercise for me as I had never thought about potters or pottery in
relation to the bible. Just though I would share the few that I found.

>> Psalms 2:9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash
them in pieces like a {potter}'s vessel.

>> Isaiah 29:16 Surely your turning of things upside down shall be
esteemed as the {potter}'s clay: for shall the work say of him that made
it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it,
He had no understanding?

>> Isaiah 41:25 I have raised up one from the north, and he shall come:
from the rising of the sun shall he call upon my name: and he shall come
upon princes as upon morter, and as the {potter} treadeth clay.

>> Isaiah 64:8 But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay,
and thou our {potter}; and we all are the work of thy hand.

>> Jeremiah 18:2 Arise, and go down to the {potter}'s house, and there
I will cause thee to hear my words.

>> Jeremiah 18:3 Then I went down to the {potter}'s house, and, behold,
he wrought a work on the wheels.

>> Jeremiah 18:4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the
hand of the {potter}: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good
to the {potter} to make it.

>> Jeremiah 18:6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this
{potter}? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the {potter}'s hand,
so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

>> Jeremiah 19:1 Thus saith the LORD, Go and get a {potter}'s earthen
bottle, and take of the ancients of the people, and of the ancients of
the priests;

>> Jeremiah 19:11 And shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of
hosts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a
{potter}'s vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall bury
them in Tophet, till there be no place to bury.

>> Lamentations 4:2 The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold,
how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the
{potter}!

>> Zechariah 11:13 And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the
{potter}: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the
thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the {potter} in the house of
the LORD.

>> Matthew 27:7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the
{potter}'s field, to bury strangers in.

>> Matthew 27:10 And gave them for the {potter}'s field, as the Lord
appointed me.

>> Romans 9:21 Hath not the {potter} power over the clay, of the same
lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?

>> Revelation 2:27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the
vessels of a {potter} shall they be broken to shivers: even as I
received of my Father.

John,

The scripture:
>> Romans 9:21 Hath not the {potter} power over the clay, of the same
lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?

I assume you have taken this from the King James Version. The New=20
International Version, which sticks to the original Greek text more =
closely
reads:
"Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of
clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?"

Some Bible scholars have interpreted those terms "noble purposes"
and "common use" to mean, sculptural and/or non-functional=20
pieces and functional everyday pottery.

The local Baptist churches last year in conjunction
with the Women on Missions group devoted their morning
worship hour to missions with the theme being shaped by
the master potter. One church actually had a potter
wheel and all set up. The potter threw this huge pot and
then collapsed it, very dramatically, while a woman
read Jeremiah 18:4. Everyone in the=20
church gasped at one time. He told me it took all his
will power to destroy the pot, it was one of the=20
largest her had ever thrown.=20

Graeme,
The King James has 25 verses
in the Old Testament with "clay",
15 using "potter". A few of these
verses use both,
and the New Testament has
5 verses using "clay"=20
4 using "potter".
I have a Desktop Bible,
King James Version on the
computer.
My New International Version
is a little clearer on the
translations, but I do not
have this one on computer
so it takes longer to look
up and cross-reference
manually.

The verse you quoted,
Isaiah 45:9, reads like this
from New International version:
"Woe to him who quarrels with
his Maker, to him who is but a
potsherd among the potsherds
on the ground. Does the clay
say to the potter, What are you
making? Does your work say,
He has no hands?"

I have made a few clay tablets
for my own personal use. My
favorite, hanging in my kitchen
reads from a hymn:

Come spirit come
Our hearts control
Our spirits long to be made whole
Let inward love guide every deed
By this we worship=20
and are freed.

The other verses are lovely also.

Another interesting and self-serving verse is Jerimah 19:1 in the New
International Version; "This is what the Lord says, 'Go down to the house of
the potter and buy a clay jar' ".

Pretty neat, huh:)? I often take this verse to shows with me and hang it in
my display. Gets a fair amount of attention, and so do the pots.
