Checking the ABEBOOKS http://www.abebooks.com/ I've found a range of
$105 -$150 for Ceramic Science for the Potter. For Pioneer Pottery a range
of $50 - $245.00

Hi -

I was checking some prices on suggested readings by clayart members and
came up with the following from Amazon - their out-of-print service. I'm
hoping that these are not the current prices. Can anyone validate the
prices or tell me where I can find an alternative source for these?

Willis Grant, Lawrence "Ceramic Science for the Potter" - $177.99
Michael Cardew "Pioneer pottery" - $289.99

Richard

Thanks to all who replied with suggestions. There are some very cool web
sites out there where I found some great deals. Although I didn't actually
pay the $125 for the books I mentioned, I did find The Ceramic Spectrum for
only $22.00. I'm a happy camper at this point.

Cheers

This is particularly true about E-bay. I was bidding on a
copy of Bernard Leach's book "The Potter's Challenge" but
checked the used bookstores at http://www.addall.com/Used/
as well, when the ebay listing got too high, I ordered from
the used bookstore.

Unfortunately, prices for out-of-print books can be very high. Price is
based on cosmetic condition, wear, quality of dust jacket, etc. Not
important when all you want is a reference book and not a collectable. I've
had better success in getting out-of-print books from the Barnes and Noble
web site, http://www.barnesandnoble.com , and e-bay auctions. At B & N, be
sure to check the "out-of-print" tab before doing your search. They list
from other bookstores, so the number available and the prices change. On
e-bay, it's just a question of checking every few days. There never seems
to be any logic on what the final price is for the same book. Finding what
you want at a reasonable price all comes down to perserverance and luck.

I will quote from the flyleaf of the book:
"The first aim of Pioneer Pottery is a simple one: to help
craftsmen potters who want to make use of natural materials
without depending too much on the potter's merchant, and
those teachers of pottery who feel that the educational
value of the craft would be much greater if pursued in this
way."
Michael Cardew spent many years in developing countries and
didn't have many options for supplies, both, mineral and
equipment. this book draws on his knowledge and experience
in these areas.
A practical guide for the geology of clay and glazes, and a
good foundation on kilns and some equipment from scratch.
I have done little in terms of mining my own materials, some
use of ash and local clays. I have built kilns. I intend
to build a ball mill, either with his basic plans or Harry
Davis's in "The Potter's Alternative", sadly another hard to
find out of print book.
I consider Pioneer Pottery to be one of the seminal books in
my craft development.
BTW, I bought mine in the 70's New for $15.00.

Ingeborg,

You don't say where you're located. If you're in the USA, I know you can go
to your library and ask for an inter-library loan of just about any book you
can imagine. I live in a tiny town in a sparsely populated state. My library
seldom has what I want, but they have *always* been able to get it for me.
I'm sure many other countries have this service in their libraries as well.

Ask your librarian to get a copy for you so you can evaluate it for
yourself.

A good book locator service is http://www.bookfinder.com/
They list 12 copies of Ceramic Science for the Potter ranging
$100-150. Two copies of the same book have been auctioned
via eBay this month. One went for $11.99 and the other drew
no bids at $19.99. Oops, it looks like they reopened the second
one with a 7/28 closing date.

Can't tell you about the prices they quoted you but last winter I was looking
for the "Potters Challenge" by Bernard Leach. Amazon said that it was out of
print but thought they could get it for $60.00. I agreed to that price,
several months went by and I received another e-mail from them stating they
had it for $100.00 I said NO, a week later they sent it to me for the
original agreed price.

I have had luck with our annual Goodwill book sale. There is never any
predictability, and it's definitely first-come-first-served, but if I get
there early, I can always find some pottery-related books for less than $5.
Goodwill doesn't place much value on these - the "war books" command much
higher prices. They have pottery books in both Art and Hobby/Craft sections,
with the same book being in both places sometimes - guess it depends on the
person who sorted the books. A local college also has a "big deal" book
sale annually, with people lining up for hours to get in.

There seems to be so much discussion about the book "Pioneer Pottery".
Unfortunately, I don't own a copy. I wonder does anyone and for a reference
book what sort of value does it really have? Is it better than newer less
expensive books on the market? In other words, if one would forget the
notoriety of the author, what sort of value would you place on the book and
it's written content.

Richard Price posted the following: <readings by clayart members and came up with the following from Amazon -
their out-of-print service. I'm hoping that these are not the current prices.
Can anyone validate the prices or tell me where I can find an alternative
source for these?"Ceramic Science for the Potter" - $177.99, and Michael
Cardew "Pioneer Pottery" - $289.99.>>

As a long time book seller, book collector, and book lover here is the scoop
on books like these. First of all, there are no "current prices" on out of
print books. The out of print book market is one that is wide open and is
driven purely by supply and demand. That is, a book is worth in dollars
whatever you feel comfortable paying. In this case, both of these books are
very rare and in somewhat high demand. In addition, "Pioneer Pottery" borders
on being a "collectible" which can drive prices even higher primarily because
in that case the people interested in the book go beyond potters and others
whose interest is primarily in the subject matter and not necessarily as a
collectible.

My opinion is that these prices are out of sight and way beynd reason. I
would pass on them unless your life depended on owning them. reasonably fair
prices would be: "Ceramic Science for the Potter": $40-$60. "Pioneer Pottery"
: depending on condition, edition, paperback or hardcover, $75-$150.

I am happy to answer any questions on books both new and out of print.

I find the discussion about book prices ironic. Don't potters sometimes
have to explain why a handmade bowl costs $25 when you can buy one "just
as good" for $5 at Pottery Barn? If a book is just a book, why isn't a
bowl just a bowl? -- Lee [see I can be brief] Jaffe

Steven,
Do you think there is a chance someone would republish Cardew's Pioneer
Potter? There seems to be so much interest by ClayArters -- who are,
according to our Mayor (Hi Mel!!!) close to 3,000 in number from 80
countries. Or is this just not enough interest to republish such a book?
