Dear Janet:
This would probably show how ignorant I am of the net. But where and how does
one submit to search engines. I presume that is so people can find one's site
when searching for things, Right?
Thanks for any help you can give.

worrying indeed...

Is this a sign that all these hyped money making schemes off the back of a
"free" service on the web don't actually work? No product = no income?

Anyone with a web site promoting their work and/or
selling will probably be interested to hear that search
engines are moving towards payments for submissions.

Yahoo! LookSmart and Excite are the first. Some have
the option to pay or not and are looking into the way
the market is reacting to payments. LookSmart already
has pay only.

The question is, will this worrying trend continue? I
sincerely hope not. As everyone who has a web site
knows, it is no good just registering with one search
engine and/or directory, you have to submit to many or
at least the most prominent ones.

The thought of having to pay for each submission would
put most people out of the running... Especially at
the prices being floated. I know it is extreme and will
not affect any potting sites, but Yahoo! are apparently
charging $600 for submitting an adult site, with no
guarantee of a listing.

In my limited experience (just over a year) I have
noticed I have to resubmit every two to three months.
If I had to pay, our web site would just no longer
exist. We are talking of an estimated $1000 minimum per
year here!

Imagine this added cost onto all the others we already
have! It could be absorbed into prices, but what about
all the information only sites? They are not earning
any money by having a web presence... They are
fulfilling the original ideal of the internet being a
free resource for everyone...

I wonder what we can do to discourage this trend? Has
anyone any ideas or comments? I really am very
concerned that big business is once again taking lead.
Having cornered the market, they really have us all by
the short and curlies, unless we take some stand on
this issue.

May I recommend the Open Directory Project (ODP) at
http://dmoz.org. This is a volunteer, cooperative Web
directory. Not only can you easily add your site (an editor
has to approve the submission and may change the entry
according to their style rules) but you can join and become
an editor if you are so inclined. It is a little chaotic (there
are 51 sites listed under Arts:Crafts:Ceramic and Arts:
Crafts:Pottery has 338 and there's even a category for
Polymer Clay w/335) and geeky, but it is a serious project.
A further advantage is that some very large Web directories
-- including Netscape's Netcenter, Lycos and Hotbot -- take
their listings directly from ODP. AND, search engines
regularly scan ODP for items.

You may also want to consider the pottery directory I
maintain. I'm going on 600 (and counting) items, in 10 broad
categories and searchable. I take URLs from postings and
banners on Clayart and I'm currently mining the list Helen
Bates sent out. If you have a Web site and want it posted,
take a look at http://libweb.ucsc.edu/pottery/ If you are
not already listed -- try searching first -- please send me
your address.

Dear Mayssan,

There is a helpful page on go.com for promoting your website. The
url is:

http://homepages.go.com/promoteit.html

There is much helpful advice there, but if you don't want to read
through the whole thing, just scroll down to "The big four" and
follow their links to register with the four biggest search engines.

Best regards,
Florence Turnour
