Dixie,
Colemanite is a naturally occurring calcium borate found in Nevada and
California, which has not been available for a long time. Gerstley
borate(Na2O 2CaO 5B2O3 16H2O) is an impure borate of sodium and calcium
with some magnesium found in the Death Valley in California.Gerstley's
borate contains the minerals colemanite and ulexite, a sodium calcium
borate. It is the standard substitue for Colmanite. Colemanite contains
only the mineral of the same name.
I have used both interchangeably and have noticed no difference in my
glazes. Mia in hot and dry ABQ
