Jeez... that was a waste!
Why not just try adjusting the alumina content?
do a line blend of China clay additions to boost it up a bit.
Never blow an opportunity to develope some control skills.
These are not failures just new paths for exploration.
Oh well, next time...
(try the colemanite ; )

I was warned not to use collemanite, I wanted a different base for my
students. The base is fine, no crackles on the main low fire claybody I
give
them, just this great material , the collemanite, acts like hot oil, that
gets
some wet French fries! ( To Smart: Are they real French?)
So what is your suggestion Bruce, should I take the 3 Kg, that I did not
dump yet, add Alumina, Kaolin, And then dump it?
I can use it inside dishes, but unfortunately, many of my students will not
understand it or why to do it.
Do you want to know why I used Collemanite ? This is my way of learning.
Some of the advises I got about thing not to do were good for me. So in this
case I lost about 15 $
...And I do not have the recipe , I dumped it too

>>So what is your suggestion Bruce

Sorry can't say, i'm not dealing with the problem
The solution may not be so simple as my suggestion.(why not?)
but experimenting with complex problems (#$@% ups too!)
can lead to some exciting discoveries. (surrendipity)

>>...And do not try the colemanite<<

I am sure colemanite is a perfectly fine material to use
My guess is that you are saying not to try a direct
1 for 1 substitution

>>should I take the 3 Kg, that I did not

How do you know you will have to dump it then?
try a line blend to get a visual take on the possibilities...
(your students may enjoy the experiment)
If nothing, then maybe toss it.
But your goals sound different than mine...
A stable classroom base glaze.
May not incline you to"lets see what happens when"
Just a good recipe may suit your needs better.

>> I was warned not to use collemanite

If you are going to follow that advice...
send me your colemanite... I can't get it here : (

>> unless these
groups, that are trying to renew the G.B. will bring us a solution to the
old gerstly borate!<<

I have a possible solution for you..
if you don't mind doing a few simple chemical reactions...
(basically kitchen techniques)
Let me organize a post and see
if the gurus can give us a difinitive opinion
on whether it will fit the bill or not.

Hello Bruce!
I work with disable youth as well as women from hard families. I mostly
fire their works at ^04.
I have 3 bases. This Colemanite base had to be the fourth.
I make many experiments.
Many glazes.
I decided not to spread myself all over the world of ceramics!
I limit myself to Raku and ^6 Ox includes ^6 crystalline glazes.
This is a HUGE limitation!
I just ordered some materials from the U.S.A. and paid about 25$ for
delivery. I would not do such a thing for collemanite!

P.S. Last month I bought from Axner rattan handles. Today I added handles to
some teapots, that these women made, real beauty!

P.S.2 I can connect you to my supplier, he will sell you every thing you
want!

It is also a HUGE area for exploration...
more than enough.
I would be very happy to have these realms
within my grasp at this time...

Yes send me the info privately...
you never know what might turn out to be a good thing.

Thanks,
take care,
Bruce
