red burn out cause?

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can explain what happened:

I fired a low fire red to cone 07 and the side that was near the peeps got
black in a stripe. It looks great, but I always thought that burnouts were
caused by too high a heat, & I would have thought that near the peeps would
have been cooler. What gives? Are the slip cast peep plugs retaining more
heat that the soft brick plugs?

Also; does anyoneone know which glaze ingredients interfere with red?
I've been firing red only kiln loads to avoid problems, but it sure would
be nice to be able to put some other pieces in there too when the load is
not quite full.

thanks,

I've been having problems with reds on an 06 and have found that greens and
blues are notorious for causing my reds to go black. The best way I have
found is firing reds by themselves and keeping the peep holes open. Good
luck!

I don't know if your using commercial glazes or not but most warn
against firing reds with copper glazes, Mike Gordon
