kristen,
i don't think you can do apprenticeship to a potter while you are teaching
english in this program, but have you heard of a "JET program"? this is
sponcered by japanese gov't and participants (about 3000 a year from many
countries) spend 1 or 2 years teaching english at junior or senior high
school. you'll have enough free time to travel around and also to find out
about learning pottery and other activities for the following year(s). (of
course,
you can be extremely lucky to be assigned to a school in some of pottery
centers.)
too late for 2000. the program starts at the end of july every year. you can
begin
applying for 2001 by no later than november. ther is a web site i checked
once
before (sorry, i can't remember where.) or call japanese consulate near you
for
information, probably in LA or SF, if not in Denver. this program provide
round
trip ticket and quite sufficient stipend. and a host family.
or, there is similar, but privately financed program, called, i believe,
NOVA
program. in this program, you teach english in private NOVA language schools
for a year or two. this one accepts applications at later times, still in
august.
i don't remember if this provides airfares.
or, you go on your own. you may contact some of language school in tokyo or
other metropolitan areas, such as Berlitz language schools. (in the JET
program
you may be assigned, more likely, to a non-metroplolitan part of japan.) i
don't
know how to contact these schools from here. there are many. and, i
understand
that it is not so difficult to get such a teaching position. if you alraedy
have friends
in japan, it may be easier to inquire about such (actually ample)
possibility.
good luck
