Hi, thanks to everyone for the useflul glaze information. If anyone has a
great satin glaze at cone 6, it would be appreciated. I am interested in
basically a base glaze which I could add colorants to. I know this question
has probably been asked many many times, but I guess I am searching for the
perfect satin glaze that has been tested, so please be patient.

Also thanks to the people who suggested pottery sitesin Italy. As another
clayarter mentioned, Tuscany and San Gimignano were breathtakingly beautiful
and found numerous local potters.

Thanks so much Audrey Cooper

Try this one, Audrey, it's worked very well for me with a variety of
colorant oxides:

Xavier Satin-matte Base (Cone 6 oxidation)
--------------------------------------------

40 Custer feldspar
9 Frit 3124
16 Whiting
9 Talc
10 EPK
16 Flint

(This may also work above cone 6 and in reduction firing, but I haven't
tested it in those conditions.)

Hi Audrey,
I just posted two clear semi matt receipes that maybe you overlooked.
I am currently testing them myself, but of course you will have to find =
out
how they do with your specific materials and your claybody.

One was Ron Roy's Satin Mat, cone 6

the other from Marcia Selsor
Marcie's matt. My test showed a semi matt (albeight I cooled it too =
quickly or it does not fit
my clay). =20

You can either contact me off the list to resend the receipes or look in =
the archives. =20
I suggest you look up May 11, 2000
under author Marcia Selsor. There you will find her matt with many =
colorant suggestions.

She also lists Clear semi matt
which is whiting 18.5
neph. syn 25.8
EPK 18.8
Silica 31.1
G. B. 4,6

best regards,

Hi Audrey!

Here is a satin matt Cone 6 glaze I use:

#401 Satin Matte Base Glaze (Cone 6)

Volcanic Ash--40%
Whiting--30%
Flint--20%
Kaolin--10% (Use EPK, or Georgia Kaolin)

Add your favorite coloring oxides sparingly with this recipe. This glaze fits
most whiteware and "yellow" (such as Soldate 60) clays.

Note that this glaze is one of Richard Behren's famous "40-30-20-10" glazes.
Other glazes of this formula can be found in Behren's booklet, "Ceramic
Glazemaking," available from CM Handbooks.

Best wishes!
