I received an email from SlowArt Galleries, who ran the board, that due to
the constant legal threats of slander they got because of the board &
contest, they have removed the URL. After corresponding with them, however,
I offered to start a message board online where people could post their
stories, removing liability from any one company, but still allowing artists
to be informed. Anyone interested? If so, I'll get one up & running using
the format they offered to let me use, and post the URL to the list.

I was going to go investigate the "Parasites" link because I have a good =
rip off story, however the link to the Parasite stories seems to be =
down, but otherwise the main page is full of helpful information. here =
is the URL:

http://www.claystation.com/gallery/galleries.html

Enjoy!

Okay, since I got so many emails from people who want a forum for =
reporting their experiences with art parasites, I opened an egroups =
forum called Art World Stories at:

http://www.egroups.com/artworldstories

It's a trial run, and is a place to post both the good & bad - if I =
start getting threats of lawsuits, I'll let everybody know & decide what =
to do from there.

This mail was some time ago and I was wondering
if anything came of the forum and whether or not
you have found it useful and effective in a
practical way?

I would particularly appreciate hearing of any
examples of bad practice in the UK, because I
often get asked by exhibiting artists about
other galleries. I have helped many with
contracts and agreements, as well as giving
advice on how to "sell themselves" as well as
their work.

Being a caring person (and gallery) with a good
relationship with all our exhibitors, they
confide in me a lot. I am horrified by some of
the tales of woe I hear about first hand (non or
extremely late payment, poor book keeping, lost,
broken or damaged work, bad packing, etc. etc.)
and the way many galleries treat their artists
and makers...

On the other hand, there is a reoccurring
naivety when dealing with galleries. You would
not leave your child with a stranger without
checking out a whole lot of things... Why do
artists and makers leave their "babies" with
complete strangers and expect everything to be
OK? The very least you can do is ask other
parents.

Thanks for any info... I think it is a very
important area of concern and discourse.
