Hi all, I am just wondering if any of you applied for the lark books
sculpture book entry and if you did if you have heard anything from them
yet........ I keep attacking my mailman hoping he will have some news from
lark, but still nothing.... anyone else??

Hi, Marie: Lark is always very pokey about letting artists hear whether IN
or not. I don't think I applied for that book, but can't remember. I think
I applied for the dinnerware one with really quite semi-functional teapot and
cup. I have been in two of their books and always thought I would never hear.
They also don't want to be asked, but you might try to ignore that.
I am busy being a caregiver to a husband in failing health though I actually
and miraculously fired a med. size glaze elec. kiln a wk. ago, mostly of
work done over a 5 month period.
Let me know if you ever hear, either way. Remember meeting you briefly.
Hospice worker is just arriving.
So long. Bacia

A friend told me that she once saw a book filled with artist statements from people in the clay world. Has anyone seen such a book? Know the title? Also where would I look in the clay archieves to find info on doing an artist statement

Thank!

Lisa

Tony,
I have had work pictured in a number of Lark Books in
the past and they have, if I remember correctly, always
given me a copy of the book and a good price if I wanted
more. They have also been lovely to work with, gracious
and appreciative.

So, I come home from lunch and inbetween the doors is a brown cardboard
envelope. I bring it in and look at the label, delivered by UPS, tear into
it, empty! Look at the invoice, says doz book, ship to me, value 2.00 US,
sent by Sterling Publishers,NY. I'm baffled. So I do a search on the
computer, find a list and on it is Lark Books. Ok, I bought a copy of The
Ceramic Glaze Handbook by Mark Burleson. It was full of mistakes and we were
asked to send the page to Lark for a replacement copy. Is this it?

I just received my replacement copy this week in a brown flat
cardboard mailer. Maybe they just forgot to put the book in your mailer!

All I know is that at a recent workshop one attendee brought the 500
teapots book... it was passed from hand to hand during lunch, and even
during the workshop, and devoured hungrily by folks who knew they had to
share it/pass it along but wanted to see more, more. I'm not sure we
need pages of navel gazing and blather in between... it's like a gallery
or museum of images, images, each one unique and surprising. I am going
to buy one myself, and nothing of mine is in it.

If you think that the work can speak for itself, or that a picture is
worth a thousand words, or that all the images we suck in in with our
eyes somehow inform our work... this is like nirvana.

I once read about an experiment where they hooked electrodes into a
hamster's brain, so that every time he pushed a button he got a little
hamster orgasm. The result: the little guy just stayed in that one spot,
beating on that little button again and again, foregoing food and drink
until he dropped over from exhaustion/starvation. Ever feel like that
when you get really focused on something you love? OOps, forgot to take
the wife to the airport.. oops, forgot to go to bed... if I had a book
with 500,000 teapots, I would just keep turning the pages while the kids
whined for lunch and the washing machine hopped around the basement, out
of balance...

Ababi. I bet there are bowls nobody has ever imagined yet... you might
not eat soup out of them, but they might feed the brain!

Vanity presses sell (do not give) a copy of the book to any hack who
submits a work... at an outrageous price, with designs to peddle more to
their friends and family. The pots I have seen in these books are not
the work of hacks.

The usual disclaimer: I have no relationship with Lark books... except
wanting some ;0) I was really enjoying the passed-around one at the
workshop but I went back to the pot luck table for more pad thai and
somebody else dove on it for their turn!

Yours, Kelly in Ohio... where I saw the PBJ play last night for the
first time, on video. The sound of the audience laughing was music to my
ears! Did anybody ever come up with a "cast of characters?" It was
tantalyzing to guess...

I couldn't agree more. I have the one that is 500 bowls and it is pure
delight and recharges my batteries.

I am sure these books are beautiful ( The 500s)
Lark would not publish an ugly book
It is the way:
I pay more for tutorial books.
I do not like this way of series;
500 raku
500 wood fire
500 smoke firing
500..... (fill the word)

Oh I like it VERY much! As soon as I see the title, I kow the exceptional
quality. By doing 500, people know they have a chance of getting a good piece
in. That may be why they have such an extraordinarily wide variety.

There's a RAKU one? Oh I have to have that one!
