Being a smoker (and social pariah because of it) I found the Japanese artist's use
of a pack of cigarettes to indicate scale oddly comforting. It's such a universal
symbol, so unacceptable in some cultures, yet totally accepted in others. And I
think there may be a bit of irony, in that this man's artwork is sooooo
non-traditional in a very traditional society, and being such, may not be accepted
by his peers and patrons, yet we in America, who embrace the non-traditional, sieze
upon the pack of cigarettes as being inappropriate, unacceptable, or simply
unpleasant. How very interesting that that is what draws our attention.
