Hi,
I want to thank everyone who responded to my post with helpful advice and
suggestions for approaching this gallery. The day I posted the letter to
this list I was contacted by the woman who curated the show for the
gallery. She is in no way affliated with the gallery and was asked to
curate as a favor to the director specifically for NCECA. She was furious
that I hadn't been paid and called the gallery immediately after reading
the post. Later that evening I recieved a very apologetic phone call from
the director who made all sorts of excuses for not paying me for 4 months,
including; he thought his accountant had sent the check, he's short-handed,
swamped with work, etc. He said he would send the check out that day.
(It's been a week and still no check!, so we'll see..). If I don't get it
next week I will notify the attorney general in Colorado and the BBB, and
approach this guy with a formal letter and take it from there. I looked
for the website mentioned by Andii, called Art World Parasites, but it
looks like it is no longer in existance. A very good idea though, having a
place to publically post the names of places that prey on artists. (I've
certainly learned from various posts to be much more careful in the future
and have every detail in writing). In the interests of other artists that
may have the bad luck to happen upon this gallery the name is; Redshift on
Larimer Street in Denver, Co. Thanks again to list members for their
advice. I'm always being reminded in numerous ways how great it is to be
working in a medium that has such a generous and supportive community.

It would be helpful too if anyone has had a really positive relationship with
a gallery to post it. I've started a file for the bum galleries. I'll check
it before approaching a gallery. It would be nice to know if a gallery is
good about promotion of work and paying on time. That way we could have a
file of good gallery references too.
