Have been working with local materials as glaze additives for a recent
grant project, but now I would like to incorporate materials such as
locally found rocks, slate, soils in my regular work. For the grant
project, I ended up smashing small rock fragments in an old, heavy cast
iron spider with a regular household hammer. Not very scientific, but it
did the job for small amounts. Any suggestions from other Clayarter types
as to a relatively inexpensive grinding, pulverizing machine? The
hammering is tough on the ole' carpal tunnel.
By the way, I have discovered some super additives which enhance simple
glazes and give them zest and life...even ground up common brick fragments
of different sizes add interest. Iron oxide in the form of rust from a
pre-civil war gun or old trolley rail are great, too.
Thanks in advance for any help on the grinding up of the rocks in my head!
