Space is still available for the 3 day Ruth Allan Saggar Firing Workshop on
August 18, 19, 20 at Architectura in Yelm, WA. (about 1 hour South of
Seattle). Ruth will share her extensive knowledge and secrets for
successful saggar fired pots. We will load and fire saggars in gas and
electric kilns. Ruth will also demo throwing tall pots, surface
development for saggar fired pieces, sealers and photographing pots.
For more info e-mail Barbra Kates at au1000@earthlink.net. You can
register by mailing a check to: Barbra Kates, P.O. Box 1431, Yelm,
WA. 98597. Upon receipt of your check, we will send you a registration
confirmation packet, which includes map, lodging and workshop info.

Hi, Barb!
Was really looking forward to the Ruth Allen workshop, then took a closer
look at the dates: unfortunately, I'm in the Seattle Gift Show, which goes
from 17/18 Aug (set-up) through to 23 Aug. Bummer! Really have heard some
wonderful things about her work, and have seen a couple of articles. Oh,
well --- you have to be tough in the big leagues...
Cheers!

I have to put in a plug for this workshop. Ruth Allan does the most
amazing saggar fired work I have ever seen! The control of color,
texture and pattern she is able to achieve is absolutely astounding.
She can actually get sharp, crisp patterns wherever she wants them on
her pots in a wide pallette of colors.
And Barb's studio is a great place- quiet, laid-back, way out in the
country.
So if you're the least bit interested in saggar firing, don't miss this
one!

John,
Her address is PO Box 2111 Wenatchee, WA 98807, phone 509-662-6991,
e-mail reallan@nwi.net. She has had articles in Ceramics Monthly about
her, and is included in several books, one of which is, I think, "The
Best of Pottery". She won a prize in one of the last Fletcher
Cahllenge shows in New Zealand before they discontinued it. I don't
know if she has any workshops scheduled other than the one mentioned on
Clayart, at Architektura in Yelm, WA, coming up soon. And I have no
idea if there are any photos online.
