potters in connecticut?

updated fri 11 aug 00

I am new to this site and feeling a little out of my league. I
recently received my BS in ceramics and am currently working on teacher
cerification (I have lots of bills to be paid!). Just wondering if there is
anyone on this list right here in CT. perhaps looking for a studio
assistant or just someone nearby to get some pointers from. Raku is my
passion, I work both sculpturally and on the wheel (though my throwing needs
some work). Hopefully someone out there responds to this post, it is my
first time posting anything on clayart and I am really green to this whole
world wide web biz so I am not even sure I am doing this right.
Also I would like to thank all of you for the information I have found
on this site it has helped me in so many ways I think I may have even
convinced the head of the art dept. at the university to give it a try (he
is under a lot of preasure to get our dept in shape for OSHA and the DEP any
advice please send along)

Hello Jon Smith: It is Todd Piker responding to your question about potters
in CT. I am in northwestern CT and have been for 28 years. If you would like
to come for a visit there are directions on my website www.cbpots.com.
Although I am not in the market for an assistant just now one never knows.
Good luck on your teacher certification.

Hi Jon, I'm in Guilford, doing ^6 stoneware and a little raku. I'm in a group
studio with cheap rent. Get in touch if you're close. I think we have an opening
for another person. Also, where did you get your degree? I'm curious about
programs, as I'm interested in teaching, but scared to death of the idea of going
back to school (I got a BA in English in '91)
Hope to hear from you!

thanks Diane, what is the name of the studio? It would be a bit of a drive
but it may be worth it. BS is from SCSU, it may be a state school but the
ceramic prof's are great and the art ed. dept. is highly rated! Also, being
a state school the prices are right on. All I have left to do is student
teach and I will receive my certification and be able to teach k-12. The
only problem is that there are a lot of certified art educators in CT. that
are also looking for jobs so it is more who you know and how quick you can
get your info out there. Another big prob isw that now a days you have to
know it all many art dept.(secondary level) want you to be able to teach:
ceramics,drawing/painting,printing,art history,jewelry,photography,digital
photography, int. design, computer aided design, etc. etc. etc.. If one is
to teach all these things then how is one to master any specific area. Dont
get me wrong, I feel that kids need to be exposed to all areas of art but I
also feel strongly (as do members of the dept.) that there may be many art
teachers entering the world with lots of introductory knowledge on many
subjejects and not enough knowledge in anything specific. That is why i
opted for a ceramics degree. I in no way feel ready to call myself an
authority on ceramic art but I do feel confident in teaching this subject
at a secondary level. BLAH BLAH BLAH if I can help you with any more info
email me direct. Oh yeah, my name is david not jon the friend who set up my
email account for me is a little paranoid of big brother so he wouldnt use
my real name I however dont care
