I saw some similar pots in one of my trips to Japan. They also wrap salt
soaked straw around the wood fired pots and get intriguing linear marks o=
n
the pots
Plain rice straw is also often used in Japan for this effect. Put it on
the pieces and then protect them from strong draft flow (which disturbs t=
he
ash / scorch marks).
Try any available tall grass type plants. Use them green or dry. Salt h=
ay
(feed and grain supply) is great too.
I have a tall grass that grows along the river about 25 feet from the
noborigama that makes nice marks.
