WHy not use thin Kaowool in the 1/4" thickness between the bricks and the sheet
metal. Around here (Washington state) Transite is called CAB (Concrete Asbestos
board) board. We have several (3) sheets at school that will be disposed of week
after next. Next kiln will have sheet metal with thin Kaowool inside.

I am just about to redo the door of my olsen kiln, and this morning tried =
to
order brick and transite, only to be told that transite is no longer
available. At one time I had Olsen's number but no longer have it. Can
anyone on the list give me the number, and/or tell me what might work as =
a
substitute material. =

Transite is also called "asbestos millboard"...... and because it is
asbestos, you won't find it around much anymore .

You can simply use heavy guage sheet metal tack welded in place....but th=
e
space taken up by the old millboard will affect the seal of the door. =

You'll probably have to do some redesigning and shimming. The transite w=
as
probably 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick..... the sheet metal will be a fraction of=

that. It'll take a little thinking .

Best,

John,

You can still buy millboard. It is, of course, not made of asbestos. Don't
know exactly what it is made of but it is used for gasket material in
industrial applications. A sheet was cost about $50.00.
