We built one last weekend in Miles City. It was about 8 feet tall. Pots
came out fired about mid-range. Raku body warped.
Started with a brick base with four brick ports for air intake and
starting the fire. The big frame started with 4 2x4. Then old wooden
slats/planks from an old building were screwed together leaving a
doorway to load. The top was a 6 inch d. 2 ft. stove pipe..
Inside started with a bed of straw, wood, charcoal, newspaper. Pot were
wrapped with banana skins, potatoes, copper wire, copper and salt stains,
etc. The door was closed a screwed into placed.
Newspaper was dunked into slip from a wheelbarrow. Colored slips were
used to keep track of layers-
white, red, white. -used old abandoned clay. Started the fire about 5
pm. Smoked then broke a flame about 7. By 8:30 weak spots were showing
and it started to slump. Actually clasped by 9:30. Coals remained
burning for sometime.(2 am). It was cool enough to unload by 10 am.
Interting effects.
The paper was wet when we lit it. It was built under directions of Mark
Browning and Sue Tirrell at the Custer County Art Center as part of the
Pot Roast weekend.

I forgot to mention that Chicken wire was screwed to the outside surface
as the base for the paper to grab. There was nothing left of the wire
nor the chimney stove pipe.
