Hi Ginny and Mark,
Most likely that worked because in removing and replacing the wires, you
displaced the small bit of smut or oxide which was getting in the way of
the good connection needed. The blowing in the holes might blow away the
scrapings, but it didn't do any magic beyond that.
Thermocouple connections have to be clean and low resistance. When there
is a problem, it does no harm to unmake and remake any screw terminal or
plug and socket connections in the line, before looking for something more
serious. Kind of like the first question of all electronics technicians
when confronted by the complaint, "It doesn't work!": "Is it plugged
in?" I got caught in that one recently: a tape recorder wouldn't work,
even when plugged into the wall. The tech told me, "The batteries are
dead, you know." "I blustered, thinking, that shouldn't affect the
operation with the line plug in, but he was right: The batteries were
dragging the line supply down, and it worked fine when the batteries were
replaced.
When you are sure the line connections are ok, then check the thermocouple
junction itself. Same thing with the oxyprobe leads.

hi mark, i am the one that wrote about blowing into
the ports for the wires. why do think that worked?
we were worried that ours might go out again when the
warranty has expired. might there be loose
connections? anyone out there that has had this
trouble or can give some ideas? (we are referring to
our oxyprobes that would not register atmosphere and
then worked after fiddling with the wires going into
the meter. thanks
