Hello, all.

My wife and I are headed for the Finger Lakes of NY state next week.
We have been discussing the possibility of moving to the Ithaca area
to live and set up a ceramics studio.

I would be interested in any comments folks in that area might have,
pro or con. Is the area a good place for craftspeople, are there crafts =

organizations, how's the cost of living, real estate prices, etc. Also,
if anyone knows of a real estate agent that wouldn't mind giving us=20
some time, even though we're at least a couple of years away from=20
moving, it would be appreciated.

TIA

Perhaps Alfred trained potters will reply to your question as well as those
in the Ithaca area. My only experience has been with the Corning, NY show
---beautifully and efficiently run with super people, but not very good
for me as far as sales went. Now Corning may be a different kettle of fish
than Ithaca, but all we could think of was the lack of population base
when we did our show post mortem. My pots are mostly decorative vases -
which do best in an arty or sophisticated environment. Perhaps functional
ware would do much better - I really don't know. I do offer my comments
based on limited experience - for what it's worth. Good luck to you in any
case, and I hope you'll get lots of feedback. Carolyn Curran aka cnc

Dear Hal:

I can't help you directly, but use a search engine for Ithaca, New York and
for Ithaca, New York real estate. Often towns have a web presence and have
links to local realtors on their web pages.

Regards,
June Perry

Hi Hal!

My husband and I have also been thinking about moving to New York state.
Below are some sites I found to be helpful. The first one has different
city links, which will have more links, etc. The second one you can use to
find on-line newspapers for the area you are interested in. The third one
has property listings, and all kinds of other info. You should be able to
contact a realtor in the area you're looking at, through this site.

http://www.officialcitysites.com/newyork.htm
http://usnewspapers.about.com/newsissues/usnewspapers/blpapers.htm
http://www.realtor.com/

If these links don't work, or you want to share info, you can contact me at
caraz@1st.net .
Hope this helps!

Hi Hal:
I didn't know you were interested in Ithaca till I read your E mail today.
Most all of my family is from the Ithaca area. I attended Cornell University
for three years and you couldn't find a finer place to settle down. I was
art teacher in Interlaken, NY just a few miles north of Ithaca on the West
shore of Cayuga. I was just up there 2 weeks ago. Lucy and I lived right on
the Lake at Sheldrake. I know there are other potters in the Ithaca area.
Occasionally I see them on the E mail Ithaca College is also nearby and a
good source of arts information. It's a ripe area as there is a lot of
tourists trade to feed your business. Let me know if I can help you.

In regard to starting up the Capriconer Pottery; the property owners have
changed their tune, so it doesn't look like anything is going to happen here,
for the present. They want $1000 per month, plus utilities.

I think I could tell you about most anything yhou would want to know about
Ithaca. Hope to hear from you soon. Give me a call.

Bob
