Steve,

Try looking at the site below it has analysis for every material your =
ever likely to need including Helmar Kaolin. I am told that Helmar =
behaves in a particular way because of the colloidal iron fraction. =
There are a number of Ball Clays that come near in terms of =
Silica/Alumina/iron but none seem to react in the salt kiln in quite the =
same way. The nearest is one called HKA from ECC. Unfortunately this one =
is developed for casting sanitary ware and contains Sodium Silicate =
which renders it useless for my purposes. Another that comes fairly =
close is PKA but it still lacks the quality that I have seen coming from =
Helmar.

Greetings,
For eveyone who uses & likes Helmer Kaolin, I wouldn't
count on it being around too much in the future. As I
mentioned before on this forum, I live nearby and it's
a relatively small mine.

Helmar Kaolin is a beauty of a kaolin for wood fired pots. I heard that
you could get it from Idaho for $6.00 US a bag. I ordered it thru my
supplier and it ended up being $55 Cdn which is far too expensive for a
clay body. a glaze ingredient maybe but a clay body no thanks. You can get
it thru Plainsman clay or Pottery
Supply House in Canada for $27 bucks a bag. they market it under the name
of Troy Kaolin- same stuff different name. Puts it in the same league as
Grolleg- expensive but within reach.
A friend ordered it from his supplier in upper New York state and it cost
him $35 US. Is it the truckers that are getting rich???????
The potter that sells Helmar is Wendt Pottery phone 1-800- 554-3724. He
says phone for a list of dealers. I think some potters should get together
and order a ton or two.
Cheers,
tony

Tony
I have been buying Helmar for years from Columbus Clay in Columbus , Ohio.
They sell it at 25 cents per pound when you buy 1,000 pounds. Or at 35
cents per pound when you buy 100 pounds of the stuff. Columbus Clay Phone
is 614-488-0600. Maybe there is an excise tax for coming into Canada or
the truckers are getting their share. Good Luck.

the Archie Bray Foundation sells Helmar at 24 cents a pound. You can
buy as much or as little as you like. Probably cost more to ship the
stuff than for the kaolin itself.

They're really nice there. The number is (406) 442-2521 or
1-800-443-6434.
