clay wheel vs wood lathe

Hi all, I have unexpectedly come into some money ( UPS destroyed my shipment
and they are paying up!) and I'm thinking of buying a wood lathe because
wood turning is something I've always wanted to learn. Especially when I saw
the prices that wooden bowls bring in galleries! To me, it's like making a
bowl in reverse (from pottery that is). Taking away wood instead of pulling
up clay. The concepts seem the same to me and I'm thinking that the learning
curve wouldn't be that steep since I already have throwing skills. Has
anyone on this list ever turned on a lathe? Is it difficult to acquire
enough skill to turn a thin bowl! I also thought it might be a cool idea to
turn some chess men! Any thoughts are appreciated! Jim in Athens, GA

Forget the wood, a friend of my younger sister turns alabaster and other stone.
Makes translucent lamps and other things. Pretty nice stuff. Subject to the same
flaws that cause wood turnings to occasionally disintegrate. Be careful.

Wood lathes are great fun.
Get a couple of books and maybe a video.
Try a course.
Be warned about the energy of chunks of wood rotating at a few
hundred RPM. A wrong move can result in the gouge digging in.
This is on record as resulting in the wood detaching itself from the
lathe and departing through the (wooden) shed wall. However, if
you take care, this is avoidable.
Some woods, particularly some tropical hardwoods produce
carcinogenic dust. So again take care.
The results will complement your clay work and be an endless
source of fun. Enjoy

Jim:
Think about combining the two art forms...I have two beautiful
wood-fired jars with turned wood lids.

Wow! Thanks to all who responded to my post about the wood lathe. It seems
like there is more to turning wood than I was aware of! I like to day dream
when I spin my pots so I guess I'll limit my woodworking to my bandsaw and
mallet and chisels. Jim
