Dear Clayarters,

My question is that :
Can salting be done only by adding or throwing the
salt through salt and wood ports or is there any way
in which saltglazing can be acheived just likt dipping
the ware in some glaze containing salt or soda
solution.
Is there any recipe for applying a saltglaze just by
preparing the saltglaze mixture and dipping the ware
in it and firing it afterwards.

i am desperately in need of any such glaze recipe if
it exists and i am new to this list and would
definitely appreciate any help.

thanks
Vivek

Hello Vivek,

Just in case you missed the email I sent you direct the short answer is NO.
However, you can get flashed, semi saltglazed surfaces by dipping the ware
briefly into either a salt solution or, what seems to work better for me, a
strong solution of Sodium carbonate or Soda ash. You can then glaze over
areas with a shino. Remember to wad the pots before putting them into the
kiln and try not to handle them too much prior to stacking otherwise you
will leave fingerprints behind. This technique if technique it be seems to
work best with clays that contain some iron.
