Martin:
Dremel tools are smallish rotary tools that have tons of little
attachments, ie. drill bits, cut off disks, grinders, polishers,
sanders. They are nice for small work. Lately, I have been using it to
polish tiny handbuilt "things" that are terra sigged. Not traditional,
I know, but it works well....(I still use lard, though) Dremels work
nice for smoothing bottoms of pots.
More about tools:
I love the feeling of self-sufficiency I get from using tools. And I
love going into hardware stores and knowing exactly what I need or
knowing what questions to ask if I don't know what I need. When I first
started frequenting the local hardware store, they were sort of
condescending... "Kin Ah hep you l'il lady?"... Now they see me as a
regular. I went in with my husband one time....he was a bit taken aback
at how well everyone knew me. Ha!
When I was in Jr High, I signed up for a shop class....I chickened out
and took something else instead. I sort of regret that. I learned much
about tools from reading and from my pottery heroes (you know who you
are!). Nowadays in jr high boys AND girls have to take a home ec
course. I think everyone should have to take some sort of shop course
too.
Now I have discovered the joys of air tools...what next?
Enough rambling,

Dear Lori,
Well all I can say is times sure have changed!
When my daughter graduated Middle School (grades 6-8) she took the Math and
Wood shop awards.
It was the first time in that schools history that a "Girl" won the Shop
award. The teacher was flabbergasted with the work she had done.
I proudly display the quilt rack she made for me.
She also was the only girl on the up until then "all boys baseball team".
She also is majoring in a field formerly male dominated Chemical
Engineering.
One of the big tricks here is that we never said she "couldn't or
shouldn't".

I spent sunday with a really nice, borrowed, portable drill putting up
shelves for Enzo. Of course, my pots went on them. ;-)
