if you are talking about the string like wicks, try the candle wicking that comes
with a wire in it's center, just make sure that the wire is not lead. some candle
companies were using that kind of wick but I think that they were imports of some
sort. but I would get them at Michaels

Thanks Mille,
I use the 1/4 oil lamp wick, pretty thick, probably not
available in candle wicking. And I throw my own buttons, so they
are abrasive when you put the wick through the hole. I put tape
over one end of the wick and string a bunch of buttons on at
once, but it's one of those onerous pot tasks that I tend to put off!
