Hi Kimi-

I live on the west coast and Leslie Ceramics in
Berkely has what is called Leslie Borate, and i have
found it is nearly an exact match. I fire with a 50%
borate, and after nervously testing the substitute, i
was very pleased by the results. Look em up on the
web at leslieceramics.com.
I am still getting a chuckle out of the
conversation i had with them when i discovered
Gerstley was no more. It went something like this:

I'd like to order some gerstley borate.
WE're out.
Oh, when will you have more?
No, were're out.
Out?
Yes, out.
Silence.
You mean, forever out?
Yeah, forever out.
Oh.

Don't get me wrong, I love the people there, and he
was sure he was being clear. I just thought it was a
funny conversation. Anyway, try it, you'll like it.

Has anyone found a good substitutes for Gerstley Borate? I'm hoping to find
something that would be good for Raku and other glazes. The Raku glazes I
use are aprox. 80% Gerstley Borate and have a high luster. Thanks ahead of
time for the help. Kimi

Check out www.digitalfire.com for info about the Laguna Borate and other
possible substitutions for Gerstley Borate. From what i've read on
digitalfire, laguna behaves similarly to gerstley, but does not have a
similar chemical makeup. Could be difficult down the line.

All this talk about gerstly borate! Now I can't bring myself to use what I have
left. I might even have to stand guard in my studio in case of creeping
murauders:)

Gillespie borate is now on the market! I know if you deal with Campbell's
ceramics
they we send you a sample you pay shipping! Glimpse is the company that
blended
gerstley borate. I just mixed some raku glazes for a quick read.

Say, Chris, you forgot to put your street address on your post. A few
friends might want to stop by with pickups and shotguns... Marauding is way
easier than learning how to formulate!

On page 42 of the sept\Oct issue of Clay Times, they mention substituting
GB, with Colemanite, Murrays Borate (available from Kickwheel Pottery) or
Laguna Borate (available from Laguna Clay Company. It says to substitute
equal amounts, and test each recipe first to be sure you"re happy with the
results.

Dennis Freeman on sun 10 sep 00

OK, Chris, I'll load up the shotgun & put in some 5-gal. buckets to hold the
GB. Or is your supply more dump-truck sized?
