Hi Clayarters! Yesterday I tested two of the gold Raku glazes that
have discussed during the last week or so. They were:
Del Favero Luster
Gerstley borate 80gm
cornwall stone 20 "
Add:
tin oxide 1%
Silver nitrate 2%
And Gold/Silver Raku
Frit 3134 90gm.
EPK 10
Add:
tin oxide 3%
silver nitrate 1%
I used silver carbonate instead of the silver nitrate. Had no
problems with it at all - no staining, and it gave some beautiful
shades of silver/gold to the glazes. I wasn't able to get good
results with the Del Favero - I think it was underfired - the glaze
was bubbled, never did smooth out. However, the Gold\.Silver glaze,
fired to 1850 degrees, and reduced heavily in paper was very nice. I
will test Gordon Hutchens Gold and Matt Gold glazes next firing, and
refire the Del Favero. Will let those interested know results of
these.
What a nice accent for some raku pieces this will be! And, by the
way, I got the silver carb from Davens Ceramics in Atlanta. It was
$23/oz. which will go a long way, and they shipped it the same day I
ordered it. Great service.
I also experimented with painting on/over some clear and white raku
glazes with varying results. The best of the batch was a glaze from
Lynn Jenkins' class - Leadless "A" :
Gerstley borate 80
Soda Spar 20
Zircopax 7%
I used Mason stain Black #6600 mixed with a little water, and results
were good, both under and over the glaze - no running/blurring and
the color stayed true.
Thanks again to all who replied with answers to my questions last
week. This is a wonderful resource for potters like myself who work
alone.
