I tried to buy a digital scale while in America on holiday this summer and
the scientific instrument supply company would not sell one to me because I
did not have an account; something about Federal Law forbidding it. So, I
ordered one via my brother's company. (I needed the digital to weigh food
for my kids who have to adhere to strict carbohydrate counted diets.) I
also decided to buy a triple beam Ohaus for my pottery and have it shipped
to me here in Dubai. For this, I called a pottery supply company - no Fed
problems there, just state your Visa card. And while I was at it, I ordered
(rationed) 10 pounds of Gerstley Borate and some tin oxide. Just imagine
the scene at Dubai Central Post Office when I go to claim this shipment;
loads of white powder and a triple beam scale! (You should have been there
when I tried to import flax seed. Five trips to the post office and one to
the Customs Centre at the airport. ) I'll either never go home again or
everyone will nod and smile and watch me stagger out the door with the heavy
box.
