murrays borate analysis

For those that are curious about the difference between our analysis and the
Mary Simmons analysis, this is the official explanation.
This frit company does not usually perform an LOI because it is expected
to be fairly low as all of their tests are performed on a Calcined Basis, not
raw. In other words the material is fired and then analyzed. I have been told
that the LOI would probably be around what Ms. Simmons reports given the type
of analysis she performed.
Mary is indeed lucky to have access to such wonderful equipment. When I
did an LOI in a regular kiln, I came to around 5% fired to cone 04.
Reportedly, Tony Hansen came to a similar result according to his web site.
Obviously, her results are much more scientific than mine, perhaps more so
than the frit company.
As to which one you should plug into your software, we will leave it up
to the gurus to guide you. I would highly recommend that you look at our web
page that is dedicated to the use of Murrays Borate at www.kickwheel.com. We
have several tests shown, and many practical use tips. We also offer personal
assistance to you if you have a problem, through e-mail or phone at
800-241-1895. Please have your formula in hand.
As a potter, I believe that you all should make an effort to share glazes
that work, whether it be MB, LB, Boraq or GB or any other substance you are
having good results with. That is the purpose of this wonderful list. Our
surveys are indicating that most people are having good luck by adding around
6% bentonite to their formula regardless of how much other clays were
originally included.
If Mary will give her permission and thinks it will help, I will also
list her results on our web page. Please feel free to contact me by any means.
