"detroit" - "tacoma"... 'move'?

Dear fellow Clayart members,

I intend to move, and am drawn to Detroit...maybe some part of
Oregon...Washington?
Will anyone who is familiar with it/them perhaps share your opinions?
Advise?

My 'criteria' could apply to other areas, and I am open minded as to other
places.

Here is what I am after:

I wish to buy an "OLD" Commercial Building - 3,000 to 5,000 thousand sq.
ft...Single or Two Storey...could be bigger...
and 'free standing'... must be VERY 'reasonable' ( as: buy for
'Back-Taxes',or maybe 5, 10, 20 , 30 grand.)Crappy Climate, and or
'neighborhood' is okey. CCW reciprocity, or availability a plus. What money
I can make, I'd rather put in a Coffee-Can, than into a Mortgage.

Prefer minimum of intrusive/petty tyrants from City/County...
'inspectors'...tho' within-reason, I CAN get along with 'em.

I understand this is possible in Detroit, and perhaps in other areas.

I presently have little money, and a modest income, tho' that can change,
and does with my moods...I will soon have a couple 'Web-Sites' for my
mailable 'Products'/ 'services', and I feel a lot of inspiration from the
idea of moveing. My livlihood from here-on, will be part 'net', part
regional-neighborhood-local.

I have numerous Commissions on hold , and have been turning down all sorts
of stuff the last few years, because I do not have the 'room', or the 'mood'
to do them.'Root-bound', as they say of 'potted-plants'...

Building to be my (one-man) Shop and 'Home' - for Pottery, and (mostly)
several other endevors.

I prefer not to be too isolated in rural settings.

Some hope of a 'Community' in some sense, if dispersed...

Other endevors are Metal Work - hot rivet, small forgeings, tempering,
repair, gen'l practical Blacksmith stuff.

Repair/ overhaul of vintage Stationary Machinery, Re-pour, repair,
Babbitt-Bearings, work on Vehicles...straighten axels,
Making/Repairing parts, forgeings, welding, brazing, Castings, lite-machine
Shop stuff...

Making Foundry Patterns.

Repair/Rebuild/etc of antique Furniture, Commercial Fixtures,
anything old, and making Parts for Same...gen'l Mill-Work...proper Frame and
Panel Doors, Commercial or other...Gen'l Wood-Shop - lathe
work...'runs'...replication...etc.Architectural elements, Corbels, sashwork,
Columns,on and on.

Making 'Old Style', small to large Display Cases, Cabinets, Natural History
and Ship-model Cases, presentation, campaign, and 'Salesman'-sample
Cases...French, English and American 'Pattern' Pistol
Cases...'Specimen-Cases', etc..also repair/ restoration of same.

Am presently learning more of 'Art-Glass' and Sign Work, reverse painting,
gold leafing, glue chip, copper-wheel...mirroring...'Stained-Glass' etc.

Also metal 'Spinning'.

Sometimes-Potter...sometimes small comissions.

And if last, by no means 'least', Making Tools for certain applications...

That is largely what I do, can do, or am wishing to do more of.
....which can be a pretty 'OK' living...and a lot of fun.

I love ALL this stuff...it is IN my 'Blood': I get a letter, or a Call, or
people stop bye, bring something bye...'can you do-this?'(Some odd thing) -I
say, come back Tuesday, or whatever,...get 'er done, 'out'- everybody happy
- that is one of MY HAPPINESSES...But so sick of this place I can hardly
THINK...weeks roll bye...I get little done...sad...turning away stuff...

I used to be prolific and industrious, and I can
not find that 'mood' here anymore...I take lots of naps, brood, read
books...when I leave town, the productive 'mood' returns, or I to it...my
'mind' starts to WORK again...I WANT to MOVE!

I have one hell of a little Shop, tho' present bldg. is much too small (2000
sq.ft.plus outside storage) and I have little 'room' to DO the 'work'..can
hardly turn around in here...I FEEL rearin' to go...but not 'here' -

Any ideas of where to go?

Thank You!!!

Detroit often gets the short end of the stick as regards publicity. If you are not
using illegal drugs and don't have any family it is a pretty safe place. It has a
fantastic cultural life, although much of this has moved to the burbs. A fairly
high pottery conciousness due in part to Pewabic and other less out there
institutions.

It may also depend upon your frame of mind. Although I loved living near
Baltimore Clayworks, I was happy to leave Baltimore. I've lived in Seattle
(close to Tacoma) and loved it there. I don't know about the price of housing
in Tacoma, but I know that it is pretty inexpensive in Baltimore. All things
considered, I'm happiest in southern CA. However, housing is NOT cheap.
