Actually a sling blade or bush ax is the best tool and a small saw for testy
cuts. You'd bettered be careful using those suckers too, especially around
others or they may be a few feet shorter due to your swinging, lol.

It varies by the rainy seasons but they have been as wide as the hands
encircling them. When we bought the place in 1980 they were free growing 20
years since planted 50 years agog and we did not see two large tall barns as
they were so tall and overgrown.

I guess we don't have enough people around here growing it and the demand at
the moment, is exceeding the supply. Knowing bamboo, that won't continue for
too many years! :-)
When I designed and built a Japanese style studio in the early 80's, I had to
buy cut bamboo and have it shipped from the east coast! I used the bamboo on
one of my windows and also, to build a single wall near the entryway which
served as a background for my stone basin/fountain.
A friend gave me a little of her black bamboo for the side opening of my
tokonomo (not sure of spelling here).
One of my greatest joys of my visits to Japan was seeing all those
incredible bamboo forests! Our bamboo hasn't started running yet! When it
does, we'll have to bury an 18" border of metal around it. I'm not even sure
if that will be deep enough! Hope the neighbor like bamboo! :-(
In Japan they use it for food, rain spouts, tea ceremony tools, i.e. whisks,
powdered tea scoops, ladles, vases, trays, pottery tools like ribs, faceting
tools, pot trimmers, food serving picks, and on and on. It's a real gift or
curse. I guess it depends on how you look at it.
There are some incredible picture books on bamboo uses and types. Maybe you
can get a side business going making pottery tools! :-)

Regards,
June

No, WE JUST CUT, DIG AND BURN IT, HEARING EXPLOSIONS FROM THE SECTIONS
POPPING. IT IS MORE THAN WE CAN DEAL WITH SOMETIMES. I DON'T SUGGEST PLANTING
IT ON PURPOSE. IT GROWS INSIDE THE BARN AND THRU THE DECK IF WE DON'T HACK IT
DOWN.

hey, how far are you from charlotte? get an exhibitors space, bring a truck load,
and sell it with a paper telling what tools, handles, etc it can be made from. and
don't forget to bring root balls for people who don't realize that bamboo is a
grass, like crab grass, you can make a fortune, get someone in your family to mind
the booth so you can go to all the neat things at NCECA

Millie, in MD, ( this is a tongue in cheek note)
