at my first pottery class, the teacher had us experiment with slab work, to
get the feel of the clay. There were only two new students in the class
that semester, myself and a slightly older lady who was *smile* impeccably
dressed. She had never even touched clay before, while i had grown up
making little dragon figurines that my grandmother would fire for me.
I don't even remember what i hand built that evening, and though i tried to
help my fellow newbie, she kept looking at what i'd made, and looking at all
the pots folks were throwing... and rather than get encouraged, i think she
was overwhelmed.
She never came back. I felt guilty, cause she'd kept saying, "how do you
know to do that? How DID you do that? " and though i tried to reassure her
that i was a fake beginner... i think she took it personally.
Moral: compare your progress only against your own measuring stick... stop
borrowing someone else's!
