I don't think it is time to create non-gb glazes. We never really appreciated
or understood it till it was gone. I for one will be working hard to create
all kinds
of new glazes based on Boraq 1, our current substitute.
We have redesigned the site at http://www.gerstleyborate.com and you can
order test samples of Boraq 1, get the Boraq recipe, and get its ingredients.
I know the prices are a little high but we have put so much money into the
web site and the research that we cannot afford to process $5 orders.
We need your help, namely feedback that we can use to improve the Boraq
recipe. We have a host of 'difficult' glazes and we will be putting pictures of
these on the site so everyone can see the successes and the failures. On
the failure pages we will clearly explain the problems and provide a form so
people can easily suggest changes to improve the match. We have manufacturing
in place to create large quantities of this and its quality is very good
and prices
will be competitive. Hopefully we will have enough feedback by yearend to have
Boraq 2 available. This whole approach of using a plastic borate,
especially for
cone 6 glazes, really has the potential to make interesting surfaces. Making
them hard and insoluble will be another challenge.
