Dear Rachael,
The things which would most 'speed-up' the Trimming of Bowls, are to throw
forms which have no more 'extra' clay at their base than 'needed', 'sharp'
Tools - and the effective use of them, and lastly, a practiced 'tap'/eye
coordination for Centering...
Bowls especially, tend to drift ovoid (from 'true') some little bit as they
dry, or from being moved when wet - or at least mine like to. Big Bowls?
Little Bowls? - anyway...you can get plenty 'fast' trimming them as per the
above considerations...
One 'usually' centers a Bowl-to-be-trimm'd by the (impending) FOOT - or
pretty much so!- allowing the rim to have some small eccentricity if the
need be..Otherwise your trimming will louse up the wall thickness of the
base and sides. These 'grips' I believe hold the work from it's periphery,
which with bowls, you can see, is not so good...

I am a relatively new potter and have been concentrating on making
bowls. I am wondering if it is worth the investment to buy griffen grips
to speed up the trimming process and help with dealing with altered
bowls. Will just the basic set suffice? Thanks in advance.
Rachael
