don't assume...fireproof

With the new thread on kilns and safety I thought this
would be a good time to remind all that "fire rated"
sheetrock is NOT "fireproof"..I have read a few
confusing posts in the archives about this.
"Fire-rated" (5/8" drywall) basically denotes the
fact that the building departments have rated this
sheetrock as "safe" for 60 minutes, in the face of a
fire. 5/8" will fail though and should NOT be
considered "fireproof".
If you have an indoor situation that is somewhat
dubious (meaning if you EVER think about a fire). A
good additional heatshield that can be applied over a
sheetrock wall is 22ga. metal that is secured out from
the sheetrock a minimum of 1", with airflow that is
unrestricted top and bottom. You can use homemade
ceramic tubes that are an inch of so in length, with
2" drywall screws, to hold the metal out from the
wall.
This "heatshield" should run from about 3" off of the
floor to a height that is 12" above the top of the
kiln.
Cement backer board (Home Club) used as a substrate
for tile installations is also good indoors

A kiln enclosure utilizing metal studs and colored
metal roofing is fairly acceptable aesthetically and
from a fireproof perspective.

Keep the flame in da kiln..
