To Students of Art and Clay:

Public Art Internship Available
November 2000 =96 February 2001
Santa Fe, NM

Help with the building of a tiled steel bus stop in the downtown area.=20
Room, board, studio and stipend provided in exchange for 32 hours per
week work on the project. =20
The Project offers an opportunity for immersion into the processes
of high-fire, hand-made tile and public art. We will be working with
clay to create several tile mosaic murals for the bus stop. The murals
will be based on maps and systems of orientation. The bus stop is a
collaboration with blacksmith Helmut Hillenkamp, who will be forging the
iron structure of the shelter. Work experience will include: developing
templates for the maps, making stoneware tiles, bisquing, glazing,
firing the cone ten reduction kiln, assembly of mural and installation.=20
There may be opportunity to be involved with some of the metalwork as
well if so desired.
Room and Board. The intern will have his/her own large room with
bath and separate entrance. The house is walking distance to downtown
and has a hot tub. Stipend is $200/month. Meals to be a combination of
cooking together and separately, work lunches usually in restaurants.=20
The ceramics studio (equipped with wheels, slabroller, electric and gas
kilns, including a soda kiln) will be available to the intern when not
working on the project.
Santa Fe has a high concentration of people working in the arts,
crafts, and alternative ways of thinking. There are three cultures
coexisting: Native, Hispanic and White. High desert climate with
beautiful hiking and ski area nearby. =20
Requirements: a commitment to be with the project from beginning
to end, an excitement about the work, and a willingness to work together
and keep good communication during the process. Hours will be
Mon-Thurs. 9-5. No previous experience with clay is necessary, but a
good visual sense and an openness to learn are important.
