Hi Glenn!

Which Behrens handbook do you own? He wrote two or three booklets, published
by CM, two of which have examplary recipes of fluoride-based glazes.

Fluoride ingredients (lepidolite and cryolite are two such chemicals) are
usually used for "crater" glazes. However, these ingredients will also help
produce glazes that don't "crater."

I checked my copy of "Ceramic Glaze Making." On page 36 are two cone 6
glazes with cryolite. I've not tried these, but I hope you will mix Glaze
III, and report to the list your results! For those not possessing the book,
here they are (Note that I'm copying these verbatim):

Glaze III (Cone 6)
(A bright, slightly stony glaze)
Whiting--1.6%
Cryolite---8.4%
Barnard Clay---90%
Add: Bentonite--2%

Glaze IV (Cone 6)
(A bright, light brown glaze)
Cryolite---11%
Albany Slip (note--now extinct)---89%

Add: Bentonite--2%

Like many good ceramic glaze books, this one is a bit outdated. Albany Slip
is no longer available; hence, Glaze IV is not produceable. I'm certain there
are other updated recipes with cryolite (lepidolite is also no longer
available, at least in the USA), or other fluoride products, in the archives.

Best wishes to you!

A little thunder in the distance, perhaps ready to accompany rain over
Arizona. Like the cloud formations this summer, these clouds move right over
my neck of the Mojave Desert, with little or no precipitation.

I was looking a some of the fluoride glazes that Richard Behrens
presented
in his CM handbook "Glazes Project".

I am having problems locating Lepidolite, but have heard that
spodumene
may be
a substitute. Anyone have an idea how to do the substitution.
Or, is it
the old "Try
it until it works!"

While I am planning to use these as sculptural glazes, would
they work
as
functional glazes?
