If you are choking the the flow by packing your ware to
tightly, especially around the flue then that could be a
possible problem.

Your bottom shelf should be higher than the top of the flue.

Are you staggering your shelves or stacking them straight
across?

Do you have a bagwall and if so try lowering it?

All possibilities.

We are having trouble firing a down draft gas kiln, about 35 cu.ft, with 2
Ward burners with blowers, using propane gas. Our problem is moving heat
around the kiln; today we could not get heat to the bottom. We finally
shut down after 7 hours of trying. Before we start again tomorrow, and
since we are relatively new to this process, i wonder what we are
missing! I know it takes experience, which we are trying to gain, but in
the meantime, (and to help us along a little!) could someone suggest things
we might try. we've tried everything we know--moving damper in/out,
increasing/reducing gas/air and i've checked the archives. any other ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

What is the floor plan of your kiln. How high are the bagwalls and first
shelf?

Lynne,

I've serched my data base and the only Lynne in Atlanta that has our burners,
has a pair of Venturi burners. Otherwise, I'd have called, but I'm not sure
who to call....please give me a call.

Aloha Lynne and all;
With all the other good suggestions I would add that if it is at all
possible ; put a peep hole above each burner so you can look down the
firebox to the back wall . You'll be amazed at how much you can learn
about controlling the fire by just being able to see where it's going;
how the sides can vary just because of the stacking patterns , how long
and short flames move during reduction and oxidation periods . You might
think about using oil or waste oil just to add more excitement to the
game . - - - - - When in doubt, turn it up ! !
