I've heard that "On the Wheel with Nils Lou" is an excellent video. he is on the
list and can probably sell directly to you. Otherwise, try The Potter's Shop (see
ads in CM or CT)

In addition, once you're comfortable with the beginning steps of
throwing...... if you can fit in another series of videos, order Nils
Lou's throwing tapes which are perfect for me right now. Not that I
don't still view Robin's which I've had for four years (since my start
in clay) ... they are complete, rich works themselves and beautifully
done. I just reviewed the teapot for the umpteenth time. I would
recommend saving your pennies and buying Nils' tapes, also. Any potter's
library with both Robin's and Nil's tapes is set!
I had a young friend who would hear Robin's voice on his tape and
announce to the desert as she came running in, abandoning her unceasing
rabbit chase, "Dere's Robin!...." as she plopped herself down to watch
the entire tape. She's older now that Nils has joined us and sort of
sidles into the room quietly, never taking her eyes off the screen. (No,
she doesn't throw yet nor do much more than pinch an occasional bowl
..... apparently just loves the sounds of their tapes.... either that, or
she's looking and absorbing and one day will break out into a full-blown
potter..... don't I wish it were that easy!
We are exceedingly fortunate to have come into clay at a time when there
is so much literature and other information available!! The earlier guys
may have had enormous fun and have benefitted from the
seat-of-your-pants approach to forming, glazing and firing ... and they
did, from all reports.... but in my artistically klutzy state, I'd have
killed myself many times over (if that's possible.....)!

there's promise of snow on the Sierras just out my door and up the

Don't be too surprised if she does break out into a full-blown potter,
Joyce. It isn't *quite* that easy, of course, but I find that ALL my best
practice is done in my head--whether it's for karate, dance, pottery, or
anything else. Imagining myself making the movements, imagining the skills
working perfectly--just as I want them to--is magic. It's better than
physical practice sometimes, though of course not as good for physical
fitness.

Don Davis also has an excellent wheel video out.
My students refer to it often.

Karin---I have several throwing videos by Jepson and Robin Hopper and have
recently bought the Lou Nils videos. Have learned more from the three Nils
videos than the others-and know there is much more to learn from them. They
are worth owning (MHO).

Hi, Karin,
I just got Bonnie Staffel's video last week and it has been extremely
helpful to me. Centering and opening are much easier for me now. She is on
the list here. I highly recommend her!
