During my absence from Clayart due to moving house, I kept up my spirits by
borrowing pottery books from my local library, and it's worth signing back
on just to pass on the details of this one!

'Traditional Pottery of India' by Jane Perryman
ISBN 0-7136-4521-0, published in Great Britain by A & C Black Ltd, 35
Bedford Road, London, WC1R 4JH. 2000, priced £32 on the cover.

This is such a delicious read I rationed myself to a chapter per night to
string it out!

Jane Perryman is a woodfire potter and she spent her time travelling
throughout India visiting potters who make both vessels and votive figures.
The book is full of fabulous photographs showing the making process at all
stages, including clay preparation, wheel throwing and handbuilding and many
firings. Her text includes a full analysis of the social, religious and
political place of potters in Indian society whilst describing the lives
and family circumstances of all the people she visits.

I really, really reccommend this book, and I have to return it to the
library today!
