All of the discussion on liner glazes is quite fascinating. I have "lined"
the inside of most of my functional ware with the same glaze since the mid
"70's and being contrary by nature it is a dark glaze. I use an iron
saturate, tenmoku type glaze with the following reasoning. First, it is a
very tight glaze, no crazing, fits well and therefore cannot collect
bacteria. Second, it is very smooth and somewhat Teflon in nature, I find it
very easy to clean. Last, I really like using it to define the lip and I
choose my other glazes based on how well they react with the iron saturate
in an overlapping band to produce the "third" color. Recently I have started
glazing without using the liner on some pieces because I have been striving
for purity of form and the multiple colors and banding detract in my eye. I
had forgotten why I originally started using the liner and this thread has
reminded me.
