Mr Mcwhinnie:
Copyright remains in the hands of the writer...when I sell an
article to a magazine, say CM, I sell the First North American magazine
publishing rights only, and reserve all other rights. CM, however, owns
the printed magazine, and so can issue overrun copies to whomever. And
along with this is the implied right to make freely a single copy of an
individual article in the magazine for a third party. However, it is also
agreed that should a reprint (many copies) be ordered by CM or a third
party, the usual protocol is to ask and receive permission from the
original author; sometimes an added payment is made.
