This is a wonderful site ! shiho@the-anagama.com Thanks, Chris, for
recommending it.
After seeing so much ash on these pots, and wondering what the bottoms
might look like (to grind or not to grind)....I e-mailed Shiho the big
question.....What do the bottoms of these pots look like ? Within 24 hours
my question was answered. Shiho makes stilts for his work.........Shagaraki
pots are fired on silica sand.
Take a visit ! There are crusty forms...... beautiful teabowls
......shino vases........ancient Shagaraki pottery......history of anagama
kiln.......kiln plans......other potter's pages (Jeff Shapiro, Chester
Nealie, Dick Lehman, and Karl Beamer to name a few). I will go back to this
site often for inspiration.....especially during football season : )

I had the pleasure of meeting Shiho Kanzaki a couple of years ago while I
was in Japan teaching English. I had stumbled across his site
(http://www.biwa.ne.jp/~shiho) while doing personal research on anagamas. I
had only been involved with clay for a couple of years - fresh out of the
University, so I fired off an e-mail asking a couple of basic questions.
Instead of answering them, he invited me to come take a look at his work and
kilns.
When My wife and I arrived, I was stunned by the beauty of his work. He had
just finished an open house exhibit, so he had many of his pots still on
display. He was very friendly, invited my wife and I to handle everything,
ask questions. We stayed for several hours and talked about clay, kilns and
life. When we left, he gave me a book of his work - alas it's all in
Japanese! But the photos are wonderful!
He's a wonderful host, a great potter, and a fabulous person.
