This is a very good suggestion. thanks. I too
make baskets and am delighted to make the
virtual aquaintance of a potter who also does
baskets. I collect driftwood for some of my
handles and find a serene beauty in the
juxtaposition of the clay form and the
driftwood handle. I have tried some baskets
with long clay handles and my success rate
has no been good. Will try this technique the
next time.

PS I am sadly not a full time potter though
that is what I want to be "when I grow up."

I make basket shapes with long, tall overhead handles and to keep them from
distorting during drying I paint them with cold wax. This also helps to
prevent them from cracking. Paint the handle and its attachment to the pot
with wax after you've put the two together. Let the wax dry enough so it's no
longer sticky, and then cover your entire piece with plastic.

Hope this helps,
