Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art lecture:
Palace Intrigue: Imperial Porcelain at Jingdezhen
Thursday, October 26, 7 p.m.
Rose Kerr offers a slide talk, based on primary documents, that charts th=
e
foundation and fortunes of the official imperial porcelain factory at
Jingdezhen in the Ming dynasty, and the problems caused by the court eunu=
chs
=92 supervision and corruption. It contrasts Jingdezhen products with oth=
er
ceramics made in great quantity for imperial requirements, primarily
architectural ceramics, which were also strictly controlled by the imperi=
al
bureaucracy.
Rose Kerr is currently Chief Curator of the Far Eastern Department at the
Victoria & Albert Museum, where she has charge of more than 70,000 works =
of
art from East Asia, including more than 8,000 ceramics. Author of several
books on Chinese art, she is currently working on the ceramics volume for
Joseph Needham=92s prestigious series Science and Civilization in China.
