Cpt. Goodwood,
A number of years ago I watched a demonstration at NCECA by a woman
named Winnie who had spent time in Africa making coil pots in the
African tradition. What she showed us was that in adding a new coil she
would smear the clay on the outside in the direction opposite that of
the inside. Let's say you used your thumb on the outside in a downward
stroke on a diagonal away from you. Then on the inside you would make
your downward diagonal stroke come towards you. I use this method both
on my pots which are entirely handbuilt and also on those which I coil
and throw. I have had very little cracking. I shun both scoring and
slipping on coil pots, prefering to use moist clay and the method
described above. I work with both terra cotta and stoneware. Good luck.
