Dear Ivor,
as usual you throw in the rhetorical question. The addition of grog to =
clay bodies, as you know, is to open up the body. This is supposed to =
reduce warping and facilitate drying.
It seems to me that this thread has gone around a few times. I thought =
the question was the joining of thrown parts with coiled parts,or vice =
versa.
As some of you are aware I make large Chimney Pots and other =
Architectural Sculptures. I use two clay bodies from Valentines Clay =
here in the UK, the Standard Terracotta, and the V9 Buff, both with 15% =
additions of kiln dried sand (80's mesh). I throw, slab, coil and add =
extrusions to make my shapes. I do not score when I slurry slabs =
together, I also use the coils immediately and just vigorously weld the =
coils. How I get away with a minimum of cracks and other stresses is by =
the use of newspaper (as stated on numerous occasions in the past), =
dampen the paper and wrap where you have joined the slabs/coils/thrown =
section/and etc., cover with thin plastic and leave for a week. No =
Cracks. I use the same clays to make thin forms os brick thick shapes, =
the art of it is ijn the drying.

Happy potting Marek http://www.moley.uk.com=20
