cullet/low-fire/lustre glaze questions

Sometimes I just couldn't make up my life.

I got into grad school, then got hit by a semi truck. Yes, literally.

Two months later, I can more-or-less walk again, but I am seriously
considering switching to low-fire for a while because I can't stay
"up-and-about" for the kinds of hours that it takes to fire to cone 10.
So...

I was looking for a low-fire earthenware recipe. I'm interested in
trying some lustre-fire techniques, so any advice on good sources of
info for that technique would be appreciated also. Anyway, one of the
cone 04 clay body recipes I found called for cullet. This seems...
well, odd to me. Wouldn't you hurt yourself trying to work with it? I
don't need any more hurts right now.

Thanks in advance for any advice, including hints on how to throw
and/or handbuild with one's left foot above the level of one's heart.
(I'm kind of serious, but hoping for a grin with that mental
picture...)

take care,
Jenni

Good Day to All ,

Jenni ,

see - Glaze Projects - Richard Behrens
[ Ask Steve Branfman - Potter's Shop
has the book - on the list ]

Has a 06 vitreous body , throwable , and
can adapt to use cullet if need be .
A white body . Plastic earthenware will
give the red and a mix of a white body
and earthenware will give other colours.

See Thompsons Enamels , on - line
for low - fire enamels as glazes .
Or see the Behrens book for low fire
fritted glazes .

Behrens also does low fire celadon
[ 015 ] and other reduction techniques
at lowfire [ under 06 ] .
AND lustre ware .

For cullet supplies see one of the letters
on Cullet yesterday .
For finely ground cullet , check Ceramics
Monthly , there was an article before 1990
on someone doing a cullet body , he gave
a supplier .

Using cullet from crushed Coca - Cola bottles
for years -- not hurt / damage yet .

Best of luck ,
Khaimraj

* Any trouble , just ask .
