I look for color...find someone who still smokes cigarettes. Have them stand
next to the kiln with a lit cigarette and compare the glow of orange from
the end of the cigarette. When the inside color of the kiln matches the glow
of the cigarette you have reached temperature and can turn off the kiln.
We are talking about bisque/06 temperature.

I am back into working with clay after a 7 year break.
And thrilled to back by the way!
I have a Paragon Kiln which I bought new about ten
years ago. It has only been fired maybe 50 times. It
is about 18 to 20 inches across and perhaps 36 to 38
inches deep, inside dimensions. It has been so long
since I fired it and have miss placed the manual in
the last move or two. I bisqued a load last night to
^05 and turned it off after four hours on high. I did
a slow rise before turning on high. I shut it off
because I thought something may be wrong and did not
want to risk overbisquing the pots. The kiln sitter
did not trip nor did cone bend. And of course, the
pots are not overfired. Did I panic to soon? It
seemed to me four hours was plenty of time to reach
cone 06. Can anyone give me a rough time line for
cone 06 and cone6 firing in a kiln of similar size?
Thanks in advance for any help. M

Mike,
I have a Cress kiln that automatically runs the
full firing cycle for me, but it has about the same
inside dimensions and it takes 5 to 6 hours to reach
cone 05. Good luck!
