Hi all,

I am a lurker and read all your posts and try to learn by them and I =
have, and I thank you all for sharing you experience. I have an old =
electric olympic kiln that is rated for ^10. I hand build, coil and some =
sculpture (small things, nothing grand). I am also very confused. My =
question is about firing. I use ^6 stoneware, (among others) so how =
should I fire this? Some people say bisque fire to a low temp, does that =
mean use a ^6 glaze and fire to ^6 to finish the pot? Should I fire to =
^6 on the bisque then fire again for the glaze? Some people say you can =
single fire with glaze and all in one shot.

What do you do? What should I do?

Thank you in advance, Harry in Iowa

Dear Harry,
Firing usually depends on your work and what you want to do with it. In
my experience,
bisque firing to ^06 or 09 (not 6) leaves the body porrous to absorb
glaze when dipped.
This is good for applying even coats to functional pots. For sculpture
you know your work best.
A slow firing to full temp. would be ok. You should be careful in how
you apply your glaze.
It is trickier applying glaze to greenware but with practise it is fine.
Good luck,
Marcia
